Deeply rooted herbal care for the whole person, not just the diagnosis
The Elder Roots Holistic Herbalist offers deliberately in-depth, individualised herbal healthcare for adults, children and families. My approach brings together traditional and physiomedical herbal thinking, modern clinical knowledge and a wider exploration of the body, mind, nervous system, personal history, nutrition, relationships, environment and the life being lived.
The Elder Roots Approach
A biomedical assessment is part of my consultation. It is not the limit of it.
I want to understand the diagnosis, symptoms, medicines and investigations, but also the person carrying them. That means looking at constitution, nutrition, sleep, movement, nervous-system patterns, personal history, relationships, work, major life events, meaning, goals and the wider circumstances in which health has changed.
I use traditional and physiomedical herbal thinking alongside modern clinical knowledge, looking for patterns of function, adaptation and relationship rather than allowing a diagnosis alone to dictate the treatment strategy.

Why Choose Elder Roots?
Herbalism should be personal, careful and grounded in good clinical judgement.
Clinical breadth
My background spans conventional healthcare, nursing, medical herbalism and higher education. I bring that experience together with traditional and physiomedical herbal thinking, modern clinical knowledge and a deliberately holistic way of understanding the person rather than the diagnosis alone.
Individualised partnership
Elder Roots is built around partnership rather than promises. I will explain my reasoning, discuss realistic options with you and develop an individualised approach that fits your health, circumstances and priorities.
No false promises
There are no miracle cures, rigid protocols or one-size-fits-all prescriptions.
The aim is thoughtful herbal healthcare that is clinically responsible, genuinely individual and broad enough to see the person in front of me.
Meet Karl
I’m Karl Bedson, a Holistic Medical Herbalist, Registered General Nurse and Higher Education lecturer in Clinical Herbalism.
My professional background spans more than three decades across nursing, urgent and palliative care, medical herbalism and education. I trained in herbal medicine at university and now combine that clinical experience with teaching, ongoing research and a deliberately broad, whole-person approach to practice.
I did not leave biomedical knowledge behind when I became a herbalist. I widened the frame around it.

Consultation Process
Before
You will receive the relevant intake and consent forms before your appointment.
I review the information you provide, including your health history, medicines, supplements and relevant investigations, so the consultation can begin with a clear clinical foundation.
During
We work through the concerns that brought you to me, your medical history, medicines, investigations and safety.
Then the wider context that may be clinically important: chronology, constitution, nutrition, sleep, activity, stress and autonomic patterns, relationships, roles, significant life events, goals and what has changed over time.
Afterward
I review and synthesise the consultation, complete the clinical record, check safety and possible interactions, research as needed, formulate the treatment strategy and prepare the herbal prescription where appropriate.
Practical recommendations and follow-up are then arranged according to the needs of the case.
Care Pathways
For some longer-term health concerns, one consultation is rarely the whole answer. Elder Roots care pathways provide a structured six months of consultations and shorter check-ins, allowing treatment to be reviewed and adjusted as things change.
Current planned pathways include Fibromyalgia & Persistent Pain, Thyroid & Metabolic Health, and Nervous System & Burnout.
Full details and fees are available on the Services & Fees page.

Ready to take the next step?
You do not need to know exactly what type of consultation you need before getting in touch. Send me a brief enquiry about what you would like help with, and I will advise on the most appropriate next step.
I am not simply interested in what is wrong. I want to understand what happened, what changed, what keeps it going, and what might help you move towards health again.
